Villa Maria

Villa Maria is a private French and English co-educational high school founded more than 150 years ago by the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre-Dame. Guided by a daring and innovative strategic plan that led to the admission of boys in 2016, along with its innovative teaching approach and a revised curriculum, the school is actively and firmly carving out a position for itself as a Quebec leader in the field of education. Villa Maria has made it its mission to develop the full potential of its students through a teaching program of the highest order. This program is applied in a modern educational environment where technology is used to support, stimulate and reveal the potential of each of its 1,600 or so students. Villa Maria’s large campus consists of buildings set in an environment of outstanding quality at the heart of Montreal.

The Role

Reporting to the Director of Educational Services, the Assistant Director will be responsible for overseeing teachers and support staff. He or she will ensure the quality of all activities related to school curricula, teaching approaches and learning assessments. Duties will also include monitoring academic and disciplinary files. In compliance with the Education Act, and working collaboratively with teachers, parents and the administration, the Assistant Director will supervise the team in promoting academic success.

The Assistant Director will play a key role in fulfilling the School’s mission. He or she will help foster school spirit among students and strive to increase their success rate. Working in an organizational transformation context, he or she will be tasked with bringing the French and English divisions of the School together to create a strong, unified community. Drawing on a strong sense of creativity, innovation and leadership, the Assistant Director will work in a co-educational environment that embraces pedagogical and technological practices at the cutting edge of education in Quebec.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Planning

  • Contribute to the development of the strategic plan, objectives and policies, in accordance with ministerial requirements
  • Oversee designated strategic planning projects and produce the required deliverables as needed to specified management committees
  • Ensure stakeholders under his/her authority adopt the measures indicated in the strategic plans and the practices outlined in the School’s mission
  • Manage specific curricula and ensure teachers appropriate new pedagogical approaches and learning assessment standards and methods
  • Determine rules for placement of students to maximize their academic success
  • Attend strategic governance committee meetings as needed

Management of Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff 

  • Oversee assigned teaching and non-teaching staff and fulfill the corresponding duties, including but not limited to the following:
    • Monitor teaching quality and pedagogical excellence
    • Manage staff-related matters, including absences, attendance, verbal and written warnings, and the mandatory presence at meetings identified in the collective agreement
    • Manage personnel in accordance with all applicable policies and collective agreement provisions
    • Conduct formal and informal appraisals for permanent and non-permanent teaching staff and trainees
    • Ensure teachers develop their knowledge of and make use of techno-pedagogical tools; check that they complete their required professional development hours in this regard and comply with the School’s technology indicators
    • Mentor and coach personnel to promote self-sufficiency and foster the conditions for career success
    • Contribute to developing teacher certification

Student and Parent Relations

  • Manage files of students under his/her responsibility and act as a liaison between staff members, students, parents and the School
  • Monitor students’ academic progress and create school success plans to ensure every student flourishes
  • Follow up on any specific challenges faced by students (bullying, conflicts, psychosocial problems, etc.) and develop solutions to help them
  • Collaborate with the school team and families to monitor the intervention plans for students who have academic/behavioural difficulties
  • Oversee the resolution process for complaints made by parents or students against teaching or non-teaching staff, or vice versa
  • Ensure the efficient management of the student resource centre
  • Represent the administration on the parent-teacher association and attend school events
  • Oversee students’ behaviour and discipline and help create a sense of belonging for students and pride in their school
  • See to delivering an excellent level of customer service and serve as a positive ambassador for the School

Administrative Tasks

  • Manage files of students under his/her responsibility and act as a liaison between staff members, students, parents and the School
  • Manage the organizational efficiency of the Assistant Director’s office and ensure the processes in place are applied with vigilance
  • Establish and carefully monitor the budget
  • Work closely with the school organization office to prepare school events, including open house events, admission exam sessions and welcome day
  • Coordinate with the school organization office to send out clear, consistent communications to parents and students as needed
  • Assess all student life activities; oversee the development of the roster of activities and the school calendar; submit an annual report on all activities undertaken
  • Take part in the School’s promotional activities
  • Collaborate throughout the year to ensure exam sessions run smoothly, from planning through to marking
  • Perform all other duties related to the position, as requested by his/her immediate supervisor

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education in a relevant discipline
  • Minimum 6 credits of graduate studies in educational administration, in a program recognized by the Quebec Education Ministry, with all program requirements to be completed within 5 years

Or

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline combined with in-depth knowledge of the educational milieu and solid management experience
  • 5 to 8 years of experience in a similar position
  • Solid understanding of Middle School and High School pedagogical approaches
  • Experience in both primary and secondary sectors
  • Extensive knowledge of novel pedagogical approaches

  • Proficiency in MS Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Google applications
  • Knowledge of the Apple environment and its educational technology applications, as well as Smart tools (Kapp, ENI, digital camera and Smart Notebook), an asset
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and French
